💄 Oil + pigmentHow to remove jjajang (black bean sauce) & soy sauce stains

Caramel color + oil · break up the oil first

The blackish brown of jjajang sauce comes from stir-fried black bean paste, caramel coloring and plenty of oil. Soy sauce has little oil, but its deep brown pigment dyes fibers. For jjajang think oil first; for soy sauce think diluting with water first.

🔬 Why this order works

In jjajang stains a film of oil coats the pigment, so water can't reach it easily. Once dish soap breaks up the oil film, the pigment rinses out with water. Oxygen bleach breaks down any remaining brown.

🧺 Step by step

Tap a step when it's done to tick it off.

👕 By fabric

⚪ White cotton & linen

Dish soap → oxygen bleach gets almost all of it out. If some remains, repeat with a longer soak.

🎨 Colors & synthetics

Pre-treat with dish soap, then wash with liquid detergent. Test oxygen bleach before using it.

🧶 Wool, silk & cashmere

Oily stains are hard to remove from wool or silk at home without damage. Lift off the residue, blot with cold water, then take it to a dry cleaner.

🚫 Don't

  • Scrubbing with a wet wipe — the oily pigment spreads.
  • Ironing hot while oil remains.

⏳ If it has already dried

For dried jjajang stains, apply plenty of dish soap, let it sit for 30 minutes, tap gently with a soft toothbrush, then soak in oxygen bleach solution for a few hours.

💡 Tip

If you're wearing a white shirt while eating takeout, just tucking a paper towel into your collar instead of an apron will stop most splashes.

❓ Common questions

What about jjajang splashed on a white school uniform shirt?

For a cotton-blend uniform shirt, pre-treat with dish soap, then soak for 1–2 hours in oxygen bleach dissolved in 40℃ (104°F) water; most of it will come out. Only iron once you've confirmed the stain is completely gone.

Do I need dish soap if it's only soy sauce?

Soy sauce has almost no oil, so rinsing thoroughly in cold water and washing with liquid detergent removes most of it. If a brown tinge remains, use oxygen bleach.

Bits of black bean paste are stuck in the fabric.

Once dry, brush them off with a soft brush, then apply dish soap, soak in lukewarm water for 30 minutes and rub; they'll come loose.
